Situated in the North West of England, Cumbria is a county made up of six districts, namely, Allerdale, Eden, Copeland, South Lakeland, Barrow-in-Furness and Carlisle.
This rural county was only established in 1974, although the name has been used in the area for centuries. The current area was traditionally referred to as Cumberland. Lying, as it does, on the Scottish border, it has been the scene of much violent turmoil, perhaps most famously in Carlisle where the notable castle stands. Built at the end of the 11th century, by William II of England, to guard against the Scottish, thus claiming the area for England. While the castle has changed during various periods of its history, it retains many of its original features. Maintained by English Heritage, it is open to the public and one of Cumbria’s most prized attractions.
Contained entirely within the boundaries of Cumbria is the splendid, mountainous Lake District. Famous for its affiliation with the Lake Poets and their part in the Romantic Movement, this idyllic place is a National Park and is home to the United Kingdom’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike.
